YEAST AS A MODEL FOR STATIN TOXICITY
|
|

Atorvastatin-induced cell toxicity in yeast is linked to disruption of protein isoprenylation (p 188-198)

Statins, used to treat hypercholesterolemia, are one of the most frequently prescribed drug classes in the developed world. However, a significant proportion of users suffer symptoms of myotoxicity, and currently, the molecular mechanisms underlying myotoxicity remain ambiguous. In this study, Saccharomyces cerevisiae was exploited as a model system to gain further insight into the molecular mechanisms of atorvastatin toxicity. Read more |

Four strains of a new yeast species were isolated from rotting wood from two sites in an Atlantic Rain Forest and a Cerrado ecosystem in Brazil. The analysis of the sequences of the D1/D2 domains of the large-subunit rRNA gene showed that this species belongs to the Spathaspora clade. The new species ferments d-xylose efficiently and is related to Candida jeffriesii and Spathaspora passalidarum, both of which also ferment d-xylose. Similar to S. passalidarum, the new species produces unconjugated asci with a single greatly elongated ... Read more

FEMS Yeast Research offers efficient and thourough review and publication of excellent papers that are original and provide a significant contribution to fundamental and applied aspects of all areas of yeast research. All articles are published FREE of charge Colour is free - except for non-essential colour in print
The Editors aim to ensure efficient publication of high-quality papers that are original and provide a significant contribution to the field of yeast research and will select for publication only those manuscripts deemed to be of major relevance to the field. The journal contains Research Articles and MiniReviews on fundamental and applied aspects of all areas of yeast research, including yeast physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, genomics, biodiversity, ecology, fundamental research on clinically important yeasts, molecular diagnostics, spoilage, industrial applications, fermentation and biotechnology. In the area of biodiversity, single species descriptions will not be considered for publication except for those species that have a particular impact in disciplines such as clinical microbiology, biotechnology or ecology. Scientists using yeast as a model organism are welcome to submit their manuscript, particularly if this article has direct relevance to the yeast community. Papers can deal with any yeast or yeast-like organism.
The following main research topics are addressed by the journal:
- genome sequencing and annotation
- functional and comparative genomics
- cell biology, structure, function and signalling
- aging and apoptosis
- molecular biology and genetics
- physiology and systems biology
- industrial microbiology, metabolic engineering
- heterologous protein production and secretion
- evolution, ecology, biodiversity
- fermented foods and beverages
- clinically important yeasts, virulence and resistance
